YWAM invested more in Poland in the 70's and early 80's than perhaps any other communist bloc nation. A team was planted in 1989 and saw real advancement, though recently staff numbers have dwindled to a few. Present work consists primarily of (1) evangelism and discipleship among discontented youth in the youth music culture, (2) equipping believers to understand the Christian world view and networking them, (3) mobilizing young people to missions by means of short term teams. These have been unusually effective in pioneer work in the former USSR.

Through the cold war years, YWAM’ers smuggled Bibles into Czechoslovakia and ministered to Czech believers, while evangelism teams worked carefully on university campuses. In 1991, Pat and Barb Foye moved to Plzen from YWAM Lakeside in Montana, USA. That same year, a team was sent from YWAM Amsterdam to start a work in Prague. During the first few years, members of both teams were involved in teaching English, learning Czech, and developing relationships throughout the nation. Partnering with a Moravian church in Liberec, YWAM Plzen and Prague hosted two Go Festivals in 1995 and 1997, opening the door for teaching and mobilizing Czechs into world missions.

At the present time YWAM Czech Republic is undergoing some changes. A team remains in Plzen, and one is being formed in Prague.

In 1978 a team led by Bruce Clewett from Hurlach, Germany, joined a Slavic Ministries team living in a castle in Reichenau/Rax. Eventually the team relocated to Vienna. The fruit of the ministry is seen today through many spiritually live Catholic Communities spread across Austria.

Through Project Life and Kings Kids, countless children and youth have been reached and discipled. Many more have gone through the many DTS's and other schools. Other outreaches have reached beyond the borders to neighboring countries like Bosnia and Slovakia. Timo Teams led by Reinhard and Birgit Haemmerle have established Bible study groups in Romania.

Besides being a strategic base for Eastern and Central Europe for many years, Austria YWAM has provided leadership and direction to the growing renewal in the Catholic World particularly through Kerygma teams which has helped found Catholic fellowships and training programmes around the globe. Austria also has a King's Kid's location in Marien.

Through the cold war years, YWAM’ers smuggled Bibles into Czechoslovakia and ministered to Slovak believers, while evangelism teams worked carefully on university campuses. YWAM Slovakia today is in two locations and their main focus is on family ministry and training.

YWAM outreach teams were coming to Hungary while it was under communism to pray and secretly meet with Christians to encourage them. When the government changed in 1989, more teams were able to come and minister openly. YWAM Amsterdam had already targeted Budapest as a strategic city and started sending teams here regularly.

During that same season of time God began speaking to Hal Young about Budapest. Hal had made his first missions trip there in 1987 to smuggle Bibles to Pastors. As he looked for a mission’s agency to connect with God led him to YWAM Amsterdam to do his DTS and to join their DTS Staff as a strategy to establish YWAM Budapest through DTS outreaches.

After leading the September 1990 and March 1991 DTS outreach teams here, Hal moved to Budapest permanently. In January 1992 YWAM Budapest became official. Those two outreach teams accomplished a great deal including planting a number of churches, setting up a number of conferences including the 1991 U of N conference held in Budapest, and sending outreach teams to Moscow, Prague, Bucharest, Sofia, and Istanbul.

Presently there is one YWAM base, located in Budapest with 25 staff. A downtown location was purchased in 2000 for a coffee bar ministry and offices. Ministry areas include Youth ministry; concerts and evangelism with a band [5:20], coffee bar Rezkigyo (the Bronze Serpent), DTS's, Summer of Service, Rock For Life Christian Music festival focussing on training, reconciliation, and evangelism and helping with church planting in Romania, Serbia, Bosnia, and Turkey. God seems to be sending future leaders of this region for training and discipling, and to be released into ministry. Budapest is also home to the YWAM Central European Office and KKI Eastern Europe Office.

YWAM in Romania was not started by any one person, but beginning in 1990 different teams came in for short outreaches. Around 1995 different ministries started in Romania including: A team settled in Cluj (coming from USA) ,led by Ove and Darlene Edskerud. A Bible study team started in Medias, the leaders came from Germany/Austria: Reinhard and Birgit Haemmerle started the Timo Teams. And in Timisoara Beatrice Simion from Romania started King´s Kids.

Though mainly foreigners at first, now the majority of the more than 60 staff are Romanians, working in eight locations. The main emphases in ministry are DTS and Bible interpretation schools, youth evangelism and discipleship, pro-life and street kids ministries. 'Trailblazers' - a mobile team - challenges young Romanians into missions.

Throughout the 70's and 80's YWAM teams encouraged believers and engaged in evangelism in cafes of Zagreb and in campgrounds around the country. Following a DTS outreach to Croatia in 1993, Lisa Bell returned to the former Yugoslavia to establish a base and was joined by Les and Debbie Smith. They began humanitarian activities and developed toward longer-term goals of evangelism and discipleship. A small staff now engage in running DTS's, friendship evangelism, intercession, worship, facilitating short-term teams and partnering with other organizations. YWAM Croatia is located in Zagreb.

YWAM Bosnia was pioneered in Banja Luka by a DTS team coming in 1997. Some of the team, including Mary McKay, decided to come back in 1998 and to remain. Another church planting work was started through YWAM Heidebeek in Zenica, while 2 DTSs have been run successfully in Sarajevo. Currently, YWAMers are in two operating locations, Sarajevo and Banja Luka. Activities include church planting, English teaching, one on one discipleship, park renovation, childrens ministry and working with school/college age students.

Since 1970, many YWAM teams have ministered to the underground churches and through friendship evangelism. The permanent presence of YWAM in Bulgaria began in 1992 in Chirpan, through an initiative from YWAM Norway, and started DTSes and planted over 20 churches in that area. YWAM Bulgaria established several businesses which produce income for individuals and the ministry here. Hristo Cholakov led the work until 2000, when he handed over leadership to Wolfgang Jani, who re-established the national office in Sofia.

Family Camps, Kings Kids and church planting teams work among Bulgarian, Turkish and Gypsy peoples in five different locations.

YWAM Kosovo was established in December 1999 as, after prayer, YWAM Albania and YWAM Serbia came together to bring leadership for the region of Kosovo. There are currently three staff members based in the capital city, Prishtina, who are supporting local churches, and working in mercy ministries and evangelism with widows and poor families.

YWAM Strategic Frontiers (SF) Macedonia started in January 2003. SF International is called to birth indigenous church planting movements (Mark 16:15) and indigenous nation discipling movements (Matt. 28:18-20) among strategic peoples and strategic places and during strategic seasons of harvest. The only YWAM base in Macedonia is currently located in the city of Kratovo. However, this base has the vision to relocate to the city of Tetovo to more effectively reach out to the Muslim Albanian population.

Challenged by Brother Andrew in the early 70's, to go to closed countries, Reona [Peterson] Joly began the initiative through prayer and going to Albania ("Tomorrow You Die"). When the country opened up in the early 90's YWAM with other missions groups formed the "Albania Encouragement Project".

A stadium campaign led to the founding of the first two evangelical churches and a DTS, and of a YWAM base led by Sandy Oestreich. 20,000 refugees fleeing Kosova for Albania in June 1998 increased the growth of YWAM Albania rapidly. Every ministry location in the country worked with churches and missionary organizations from around the world with practical needs and social support to deal with trauma. YWAM workers were responsible for food distribution, setting up a kids care programme and YWAM also led a social support program for Christian workers to equip them for listening, trauma relief and other immediately needed resources. In addition, individuals came to support the YWAM office and co-ordinate the work and teams. Two new works a church plant in Prizren, Kosova and an internet café in Prishtina reaching out to students, have emerged from this time of crisis, and with that many are coming to know the love of God through the practical way it was displayed in the recent months.

YWAM Albania is in 3 different locations: YWAM Burrel, YWAM Elbasan, and YWAM Albanian National Office.

Greece was on the School of Evangelism field trip trail which brought hundreds of YWAM'ers there in the '60s and 70s. The Anastasis also was Athens while being refitted in the early '80's. YWAM's permanent presence began in Greece when Jim & Judy Orred moved there in 1986. They came to develop outreaches primarily to the Muslim minorities in the Balkans and Turkey. Eventually other staff followed and a DTS was held in 1992.

Greece is definitely one of the more difficult countries in Europe, spiritually speaking. Very few of the short term YWAM'ers have stayed beyond outreach, and few missionaries have ever learned the language.

Greece is an Orthodox nation with deeply engrained traditions and values, where religion and nationality are intertwined. The Orthodox church is often militant in relation to other Christian traditions. A globally publicised court case involving two YWAMers and a Greek pastor charged with proselytism in 1986 resulted from a young Greek having been given a New Testament. Although sentenced for three and a half years in prison, the defendents were eventually discharged, although the charges were not dropped.
